About the Department

The Department of Applied Information Technology is a rather new department and it is currently going through an extensive process of change and development.

It is an integrated department, and part of both the IT Faculty at University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology. The department has evolved from a union with the “IT University” (ITU). The objective was to build a strong academic institution by bringing together most of the IT related research and education in the greater Gothenburg area under one organization. During several years, a significant number of research groups, discontinued departments, sub-departments, and individual researchers, were transferred from other parts of the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers to ITU to become part of an increasingly multi and trans disciplinary academic environment.

From 2001 until the end of 2008, the department was completely embedded in the IT University and did not resemble a regular department with a conventional structure, roles, functions and responsibilities were interimistic. A strategic and goal oriented process was initiated in January 2009 and has since then characterized the efforts at the department. The department is thus in the process of organizing and structuring which in turn should be perceived as an advantage.

Organisation and managment

The department is led by the head of the department, the deputy head and the head of administration. The department has a departmental advisory team where the majority of the members are representatives from industry. The departmental advisory team meets four times a year to discuss the department’s strategic and long-term matters. Educational questions are managed by the educational advisory team led by the vice head of the department responsible for education. Students are represented in the departmental and educational advisory teams.

The department is organised into six divisions and an administrative division. The divisions form three partly overlapping complete milieus: informatics, learning and visualization.
