Unconventional conference challenges boundaries

News: Jun 22, 2011

It is time for GikII 2011, a conference for researchers who would like to challenge the boundaries of the research area between law, technology and popular culture through experimenting with odd ideas and new thoughts.

GikII is taking place for the sixth consecutive year and for the first time in Scandinavia. The conference is touching upon the area of law, technology and popular culture and is dealing with issues regarding our societal use and misuse of technology. Mathias Klang at the Department of Applied IT is organizing the event.

– The purpose of the conference is to let researchers experiment with odd and unusual ideas and new thoughts on the area. The participants are used to formal conferences but attend GikII to try out and discuss more extreme ideas, Mathias Klang explains.

GikII started out in Great Brittain but the particpants are coming from Asia, USA and Europe to discuss issues like the need for a new legal regime for the regulation of virtual property, copyright laws, technophobia and technophilia, and much more. This year the conference theme is freedom, openness and piracy. The conference is taking place at the IT University on Lindholmen 26-28 June.

– During these days the IT University is host for specialist researchers, says Mathias Klang. Through GikII the IT University is established as an important hub for cooperation between specialist researchers across the world.

More information on the conference is available on http://www.gikii.org or by contacting Mathias Klang.
