Visualization

Visualization is in the process of being built as a designated area of research and education at the department. It consists of three parts that will work together:

  • Digital Representation
  • Interaction design
  • The Visualization Centre of Göteborg” - a joint effort between Chalmers, Business region Gothenburg and Lindholmen Science park that will be launched during the year 2010-11

Visualization is the discipline of using computational power to present information to users in the most suitable way, and supporting them in interactively exploring it. At the department of Applied IT this is explored through a user-centered approach with strong industrial collaboration and integration with its education.

Research direction

Through focusing on the interaction and digital representation, the group’s research addresses the following issues:

  • Design of applications and interfaces for the next generation systems for vehicle safety
  • Construction of tangible interfaces to support co-located multi-user systems and natural interaction over distances
  • Design and development of software tools to support clinicians in their daily work and research
  • Development of design methods and languages for game design, and how to apply this in other software
  • Creation of models to understand how people experience virtual objects
  • Design of system to support crisis management
  • Computer-aided and artificial creativity, related to music composition and improvisation (especially in connection with evolutionary algorithms).

The work is conducted in collaboration with companies, e.g. Volvo Cars, Nokia Research Center, NCC Teknik, and other universities, e.g. Sahlgrenska Academy, Luleå University, Tampere University, ETH Zurich.
