My name is Magnus Bergquist and I am teacher, supervisor and researcher at the Department of Applied IT, University of Gothenburg. I am involved in several of the programmes and courses given at the department, such as the the Ph.D. programme (Forskarskolan), Systemvetenskap: IT, människa och organisation, IT-Management, Science and research methodology and Business Technology.
My main foci as a teacher are the areas IT & Society, qualitative theory and methods, ethnography and scientific writing. I also supervise master theses and Ph.D. projects.
In research I am concerned with IT in its social, cultural and societal context. Several projects are about organizational, social and cultural aspects of Open Source. Other projects are dealing with knowledge management (KM) in different contexts. I also have an interest in knowledge processes in relation to narratives and story telling.
In my research I often choose a qualitative ethnographic approach - in-depth interviews, observations etc. I take an interest in understanding the relationship between people’s way of working and doing things as an entrance to an understanding of both organizations and society at large. Doing so will bring us a deeper understanding of the role of IT in different contexts.
