Metrics Research

The goal of this research is to provide the software industry with methods/tools for effective and efficient use of software metrics.

The projects in software metrics have been conducted in close cooperation with Ericsson since 2006 under the research program Software Architecture Quality Center sponsored by Ericsson Software Research and Ericsson in Gothenburg.

Our research addresses the following research problems:

  • How to find the main metrics in software projects?
  • How to create effective and efficient measurement programs?
  • How to create early warning systems which will "warn" projects, products, and organizations about potential problems?
  • How to identify and effectively monitor bottlenecks in software projects using quantitative data?

These problems have been (and still are) addressed using empirical methods: experiments in industrial setting, industrial case studies, and surveys among practitioners.

In order to address the industrial needs to comply with standards our work has been based on the following standards:

  1. ISO/IEC 15939 - "Software and Systems Engineering - Measurement Processes"
  2. ISO/IEC 25000 (series) - "Software Quality Requirements and Evaluation (SQuaRE)"
  3. ISO/IEC 9126 (series) - "Software Quality Metrics"
  4. ISO/IEC 14598 - Information Technology - Software Product Evaluation
  5. ISO 9001

In the future we intend to work with predictions and forecasting in software development.
